Multiple Exceptionalities
The Ontario Ministry of Education uses the term multiple exceptionality for any student who meets the criteria of more than one exceptionality (Course Content, Module 1). Students with multiple exceptionalities range in severity, similar to any other exceptionality. Therefore some students require a higher level of intervention and support, while others require minimal support to be included into mainstream classes.
Students with multiple exceptionalities could exhibit a wide variety of characteristics depending on the combination and severity of the disabilities, therefore, inclusionary practices for these students varies greatly from one student to the next. Identifying the key characteristics associated with the differing exceptionalities will help determine the best strategies for successful inclusion of the student.
Once key characteristics are determined, examine the pages on this website to determine best strategies for inclusion, as well as the benefits and cautions related to the type of exceptionality.
